Develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to keep schools, offices, hospitals, and commercial buildings clean and running smoothly.
pHASE 1 (64 hours)

General Custodial

This course provides an overview of the responsibilities. skills and procedures needed for maintaining commercial facilities. Safety, awareness, and incident reporting are covered in this course and is ongoing throughout the training. The course includes the identification, usage, preparation, and storage of cleaning chemicals. Students will explore topics like the 9-step bathroom cleaning routine, preparation and organization of supplies.

pHASE 2 (64 hours)

Floor Care

This course provides an overview of the responsibilities. skills and procedures needed for maintaining commercial facilities. Safety, awareness, and incident reporting are covered in this course and is ongoing throughout the training. The course includes the identification, usage, preparation, and storage of cleaning chemicals. Students will explore topics like the 9-step bathroom cleaning routine, preparation and organization of supplies.

pHASE 3 (72 hours)

Bathroom and Walls

A hands-on course that includes the tools and techniques for basic bathroom cleaning. Students will continue to explore topics like the 9-step bathroom cleaning routine, and preparation and organization of supplies. Dusting, vacuuming, and wall washing will be explored. Students will develop skills with the identification and use of equipment such as a janitorial cart, supplies and chemicals, garbage removal, and inspecting work.

pHASE 4 (92 hours)

Custodial Methods and Procedures

A hands-on course learning the procedures for the proper use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and procedures for cleaning various floor surfaces. The course will include buffing, scrubbing methods, stripping and waxing, burnishing, use of the auto scrubber, handling, preparing and assembling parts for standard buffing machines. Inspection methods, maintenance and safety procedures for operating machinery will be covered.

pHASE 5 (92 hours)

Office Cleaning

A course designed to include practical hands-on experience in a 7-step office cleaning routine. Preparation, garbage collection and recycling, use of equipment and supplies such as the push broom, treated dust cloth, trash can liners, vacuum, feather duster, caddy tray, mop and bucket, and chemical usage for various desktop surfaces. Students will discuss safety requirements and precautions for office cleaning.

pHASE 6 (16 hours)

Work Readiness

Students will be exposed to a series of modules that give basic skills in work readiness. Interactive learning activities provide opportunities for learners to explore, build and apply the skills needed to succeed in work. Students gain basic computer literacy through hands-on practice integrated into work readiness and world of work courses. Students also learn basic hard skills and soft skills necessary to obtain and keep employment.

* This program is designated as Special Vocational Training (SVT) by the New York State Education Department, designed for individuals without a Highschool credential.  Applicants for SVT programs must come referred by an appropriate State Agency such as ACCES-VR (Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation)
